Lousy power, need tuning suggestions

I have a 73 240 with L28, SU carbs and Electronic Ignition from a 280z. Power band only goes to about 5200 rpm, then dies! Also, with new distributer, I have to keep it so far advanced that it is hard to start. If I back off the timing, then no power when driving. Is my vaccum canister wrong one? (I think I have the "K" version) Do I need to re-jet my SU's to support the extra displacement? it has stock exhaust/manifold, stock(but new) valve springs, and stock cam. It is not 9.0 compression pistons... they look dished instead of flat. Any Idea what compression might be? I know that this z should have a LOT more power... I've driven others that were running correctly. Don't know how to get it into that screamin' 6000+ rpm range. Help!

Test your vacuum advance with a vacuum pump. You may have a vacuum leak somewhere.
