I could be wrong, but...
The tanks in the two models I believe are the same, but in 1977 they switched from a full sized spare tire to a space saver and increased the tank to 21 gallons in order to make it more useful as a rally car.
As long as the tank's from the same side of '77 as the car you should be good.
