Fuel rail differences between 77 and 78 280Z
 

I picked up a fuel rail that was from a 1977 280Z to replace on my 1978 280Z. Thought it would be a simple switch (so did the seller), but when I placed the 77 by the 78 on the engine, there were differences. Chiefly, placement of injectors and a narrower radius at the ends where the bends take place. I'm sensing I shouldn't try and make it work. Thoughts?

All fuel injected L-Series manifolds have the same injector setup, so the spacing didn't change. Early fuel rails were "multiple piece" with several hoses linking it together. All other rails are "trombone" style.

Perhaps post a pic of the rails so we can see what you mean?

Since the injectors are all on the lower straight, they are in the same position on both rails, no? I just see mounting arm support differences. Not sure why you are trying to swap rails... but if you just want the injectors, swap them instead of the rails.

It's because the rest of the car is in very nice condition, both interior and exterior. BUT, the engine compartment was neglected and I want to begin improving on its appearance. The rails on the car are rusty, so I would normally take them off to clean and restore. I bought the other rail because it already has a good coat of black paint?! I was/am leery of changing out the fuel rail and injectors (or any part) because the engine runs great and I wouldn't want that compromised. Don't see how it could, just a bit too cautious. So, there you have the whole story. I will be replacing and/or cleaning/restoring those items in the engine compartment, PLUS getting rid of the Z-Bart that was sprayed in the engine area (and under side of hood). My take on your comments is the rails may look different, but they are similiar enough not to worry.

If you want to "improve the appearance" of the engine bay, just get a Pallnet fuel rail... much cleaner look, easy to remove & install, option for fuel pressure gauge. I believe he charges about $120 for a basic setup. Pallnet@hotmail.com
