Car only reaches 4k rpm
My 1976 280z is only reaching 4000 rpm on every gear when i accelerate and struggles to get to 5000 & 6000 rpm on nuetral. The guy at Mike Z Shop told me it was a bad AFM and i was wondering if i should buy the afm from the z store for $169.95 with a $400 core charge or pay $250 for him to do it. Can people who had problems with their AFM please help.

Why are you going to pay someone $250 to remove four bolts, two clamps and a plug?
And I would bet all you really need is a tune up, generally when the AFM goes out of adjustment it either doesn't run at all, runs REALLY rich or really lean. if you have a multimeter there is a section in the FSM that tells you how to check it. |
I know i took it off before i posted the thread it's $250 for the part basicly after i searched around.
So then what could be the cause of maxing out at 4000 rpm |

For starters, check your ignition timing, check/replace distributor cap, spark plugs and wires, check the fuel system. Is it stopping because it's running too lean? Could be a lot of things. |
Yeah ill try the tune up cause my car had its head rebuilt and the gas tank cleaned out and it runs fine.
I bought the manuel and have read the xenon link but ima have to recheck. |
Have you "rebuilt" your afm yet? it takes all of 15 minutes, a screwdriver and some silicone. could save you some money. check this out-
