280Z engine swap into 240Z
I've a question about swapping a 280Z engine into my 240Z. I have a 240Z without matching numbers engine and am thinking about swapping in a 280Z engine with flat top pistons. I have an e31 head and worry about having to use super high octane gas if I use this head on the 280Z engine. Or would I get better results just putting the e31 head on my 240Z engine and selling the E88 head. I'd like to be able to use pump gas and could switch to premium if this is necessary. Right now the car needs lots of work and is not running (not well anyway). I know where I can get a 280Z engine for free, so that part is not hard. However, I'll probably have to buy the non-dished pistons. Hope I don't sound too mechanically challenged. Any advice I get get would be welcomed. Oh yea, I plan on using the original 1970 SUs for carbs, no matter what engine I go with. Thanks, Gary

The advantage to the 280 block is size. The 280 is a 2.8 liter, if you are gonna rebuild you can bore it out to a 3.1. The 240 is a 2.4 liter. So as you can see the 280 is the better way to go. You would have to run premium with the flat tops, but pump gas should be fine. Although every once in a while I would run some av gas in it.
I hope this helps some.
