Inexspensive way to lower?

I woul like to lower my 75 280. Can I simply cut my coils? Or is there another cheap way to to do it?

NismoPick Oct 25, 2007 07:34 PM

Cheap = Crappy. Get a set of Eibach springs.

jimp280z Oct 25, 2007 07:52 PM

How much? I'm looking for at least 3 inches

NismoPick Oct 25, 2007 07:56 PM

uh... 3 inches?! :paranoid: Have you perhaps measured that on the car? You'll bottom out everywhere you go. Please don't say you want to make a "lowrider z." You can get a set of Eibach's for $170-$220. They lower the car about 1.5"

jimp280z Oct 25, 2007 07:59 PM

well I know that sonds like alot, but I have quite a bit of room. No I don't want to be bouncing around like a town-car but I want to tuck tire. I lowered it on photoshop and they look sweet, ya know?

jimp280z Oct 25, 2007 08:01 PM

I mean continental. You seen those things bounce around town I'm sure.

snwbrderphat540 Oct 25, 2007 08:06 PM

dude, 3 inches will rub ur fenders when you turn. 1.5-2 max. cutting will work, but poorly.

entropy31 Oct 25, 2007 08:22 PM

3" is WAY too low. and cutting coils is the ghetto way to do it. your car will ride and handle like a dump truck.

Does Photoshop test drive the car for you these days? I gotta get me the latest version I guess...

Oh... and what do we know anyway, it's not like we OWN Z cars... :wasted:

jimp280z Oct 25, 2007 09:22 PM

I'm not saying I don't believe you. I just saying that I have way to much room in my fender wells and I want to change that without spending money I don't have.

NismoPick Oct 25, 2007 09:35 PM

Lowering it 3 inches will murder your suspension. The car will have so much camber you won't be able to control it well, and you'll go through tires every 1000 miles or so. If you want it to have a mean / cool stance, get 1.5" lowering springs, and some fatty wheels on the rear w/ fender lips to cover.

and with that kind of negative camber, you will kill yourself in even a little rain.

chinesekid Oct 25, 2007 11:24 PM

we all had stock hight before too, i though 1-1.5 inch would still be to high and wouldnt make a difference but it turn out great, it lowers more then you think to the eye

hoov100 Oct 26, 2007 12:26 AM

in my z32 with a 2.5" drop and the body kit made the frame sit 2.5 inches off the ground and the body 2 inches. as long as you put stiffer springs in it i dont see a problem with lowering it that much..other then normal alignment issues..

260zturbo Oct 26, 2007 05:44 AM

cutting springs is a big no no. dont ghetto something bc u dont have money. just save your pennys and get a something name brand. we can tell ya not to but cant stop you.

Spraguepsycho1 Oct 26, 2007 07:19 AM

Another thing to consider is to cut the springs you have to go and pull everything apart to get to the spring (you can't, or at least shouldn't, try cutting a loaded spring). If you need to do all that work, you might as well go the extra mile and put in new stiffer springs, and most likely new stiffer than stock valved struts/shocks since the suspension will have less travel room to do it's job properly.

Bleach Oct 26, 2007 08:11 AM

If you drop the car 2 inches you'll be tucking tire unless you're running some undersized tires right now.

Get some 8 inch wide wheels. Those will fill up the fenders nicely.

jimp280z Oct 31, 2007 09:42 PM

Right on. I get the message. Thanx

theramz Nov 5, 2007 07:09 PM

You can cut the shock tubes by what ever amount you want to lower it. About mid way on the strut tube below the spring perch. Then you weld an outer sleeve to reinforce it. You will need shorter shocks or they will bottom out and fail. Stock springs have to much travel so you will need bump stops. You will also need camber plates or your car will look like a cartoon mobile. If you get it real low it will look bad ass but will drive like shit. I have Tokico springs and shocks on mine and it is 1" lower with room for at least another 1 1/2" but it is perfect for street. I have an idea in the works to put air bags at least on the front to get it over the driveway. Summit sells parts to make it for about $250. Total cost of a good suspension is about $800-$1000. Do it right or you'll do it over.

Sweets Nov 5, 2007 07:20 PM

dont cut them please. The struts are not designed to operate with a shorter spring that factory. Get a set of Tokico struts with lowering springs off ebay for $350. Save your christmas money.

theramz Nov 5, 2007 07:41 PM

The Tokicos are about 2 inches shorter than factory springs, in fact you don't need a spring compressor to install them. Cutting the tubes has been an effective way to lower the Z for years.
