coils?
can someone please send me a link how to throw coils on your 280z? im sure there have been plenty of threads on these before. i have no clue how to install them, or what i need to modify. the only problem is that everyone ive looked at doesnt make sence to me. like this one. it just seems to go too fast for my level of stupidity.

It's pretty straight forward. If you don't know what you are doing, I suggest reading a couple books or online tutorials about suspension basics.
I typed "how to install coilovers 240z" into www.google.com (great website!) and got tons of results. Clicky: http://video.google.com/videosearch?...d=0CCIQqwQwAw# MM set: http://www.modern-motorsports.com/ca...hp?cPath=57_59 |
i already did that i came up with all of this stuff
http://forums.nicoclub.com/zerothrea...postid=4755917 and these 2 tutorials. http://www.geocities.com/bry593/coilover/coilover.htm http://forums.nicoclub.com/zerothread?id=237090 im saying i dont understand those 2 walk thoughs. is there one thats more straight forward? the 2nd one really doesnt make any sence to me with the cutting of the tube then sticking the strut in it...?? i think thats how it goes. and that video doesnt work for me. |
and i dont understand modern motorsports' coils, is that only 2 for 430? or all 4? and what i really dont understand spring rates either. what are those?
edit: what is the differnce between these two coils? aside the fact that the z store ones come with camber plates. are those neccesary? and why are they so much more?? http://www.modern-motorsports.com/ca...products_id=12 http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/PSDC14/23-4123 |
Looks like you cut under the perch, then weld on the threaded housing, and Im guessing the threads for the strut bolt itself is in the new housing piece

Ok that one is a very new one to me. So know I know of 3 different coil kits... Cut and weld / Perch replacement, and super short spring with a slip on perch(no cutting or welding but has an insanely harsh ride from what I've seen)
|
do you need to weld a support on the strut tube itself under the threaded tube dealio to keep the threaded tube at the correct height?
|
I'm not sure. looks like it depends on the kit but it its like that one in that link your showed. it looks like you grind off the old perch, slip on the stop collar and weld it where you need it then you slip on the threaded collar and modify the strut hat to fit the spring right

I believe so on the S30

this is embarrassing....
the coil overs (threaded tubes) DO GET WELDED ON, it says right in the description. the perches are what adjust the ride height and go OVER the threaded tubes. and its not rocket science to change the SPRINGS. unbolt the three nuts from the strut tower (the top 3 bolts in the engine bay) the tower drops down ease the tops out of the wheel well stick on spring compressors tighten them up then remove the top nut on the strut (only one nut) and remove. and the S30 covers the 240 260 and 280Z, its just a chassis code. however i believe there are differences in the strut setups from the 240/early 260Z and the late 260Z and 280Z that's why they ask what car you are installing them on when you order. also google spring rate, but basically if you want to drive the car on the street and get good handling 200lbs is a great rate maybe a little less. the higher the spring rate number the stiffer the spring. |
how is this embarssing? im just asking for help.
and how do you weld the threaded tubes on? there aluminum. correct? the perches are what adjust the ride height and go OVER the threaded tubes. i got lost here. edit: i got some instuctions from modern motor sports. they seem somewhat straight forward. |

i understand you are asking for help, but good research would clear up alot of your confusion and just you two going back and forth and alot of it being wrong is the embarrasing part. we start somewhere though so no big. but sounds like you need to take it to a pro and watch them do it or get someone who KNOWS (doesnt claim to know but really knows) what they are doing and have them help you. if you cant understand by words in text on the internet then learning by example is what you probably need to do
|
yeah. i could probably find somone. im just not familiar with anything with suspension. and especially that you have to modify the strut tubes and stuff.
|
its not hard to "modify them" but you do need to be a good welder. cut off the stock perches slide the tube over and weld. not hard just need to be a good welder. however i dont see why you want these so bad. just get a good set of lowering springs. coil overs are only necessary if you intend to be doing alot of track time.

well this car isnt my "daily driver" or anything. so its not like ill be driving on every sort of terrain here and there. and i had planned on doing a few drifts here and there.
|
You need LSD to drift. :D Hopefully you've got a $2k suspension budget planned out... and another $2k-$5k for engine work so you can actually have enough power to drift.

and this car isnt going to be mainly used to drift. just some little slides here and there. |
another ?.. i know you get what you pay for, and yada yada yada
but does anyone have a posivite or negative input on these coils? or would it just be better to go with ground control or modern motorsport coils? http://cosmoracing.com/productinfo.asp?cid=259&pid=1469 |

how about a welded diff?
and this car isnt going to be mainly used to drift. just some little slides here and there. So you want a welded diff for normal driving? Hopefully in your normal driving you never have to turn. The reason cars have differentials is because when you turn, the outside wheels are traveling faster than the inside wheels, thus the need for something to separate the rotating speeds (a differential). If you have a welded diff, both wheels will turn at exactly the same speed all the time... which means when you turn, the outside wheel will skid and hop (not fun). It also creates tons of pressure on your suspension. A local Z car guy (Monty from Miles Unlimited) told me the story of his SCCA 240z losing it's whole rear cross member at speed on a course. :D Again (and hopefully the last time I'll have to say this), you REALLY need to do some simple research on suspension. Go to www.google.com and type something in... then review your results. |
believe it or not. i know what a welded diff is and how it skips like that. anyways. thanks for help. im going to do some research for a bit. then probably buy some coils in a week or two. thanks again for putting up with my stupid questions!
|
can you call them coil overs. coils just... isnt right, ignition coil... coil overs... heli coil... there are alot of "coil" terms in the automotive world.
