Painted my '77

It's finally painted! I bought this from member TEDS280z 2 years ago. He had to give up on it so I finished it. He had the engine completly rebuilt, bored, pistons, head, everything. When I got it it was all apart so I figured I could just put it together and-. I got it running great and decided to sell it to get cash for my '70. It had some serious rust areas, firewall, inner fender, lower fenders, hatch area, the rear valance was bashed in around the gas tank, the hood and roof looked like a fat guy walked up and down it. Besides that it was a real beauty!
It was ready for paint in April but it was to cold.
I painted it outside, first high build primer and back inside for block sanding. Back outside for 3 coats of base. It was to hot that day and I got a lot of orange peel look.
Back inside and assembled it for color sanding. This time I painted it inside with the doors closed. 2 coats of base, 1 coat of 50% base 50% clear. Then 2 more coats of clear only. Yes, I used a resperator mask.
I couldn't wait any longer to show it to you guys so here she is. Will finish sand and polish then put the trim on and new molding. I cleared back the old molding for a complete paint job, glass is just setting in place. The color is '05 350Z Chrome Aluminum.

Where did you learn how to paint? I ask because it looks great.

Thanks, I have painted machinery so I learned how to prep and use a gun. However a car is alot harder to prep and light colored metalics are much harder to get even. It was a great learning experience that I spent several months doing.

How did you refinish your wheels? I have the same 'Westerns' on my 78 and they're in need of some lovin'

theramz 01-02-2014 11:26 AM

You can't do a good job with them mounted. I used a small stainless steel wire brush and some TSP dissolved in hot water. I hand sanded the rim edge and spoke faces with wet or dry. Then I buffed them on my buffer wheel. It took about an hour for each wheel for the buffing.
