Starting issues
Hello people,
I am having a small starting issue in my z32 5-speed and I can't seem to pin point it.
So after rebuilding the top end (new head and the whole 9) my starter seemed to have taken a poop, or so I thought.
as far as the stater related items, new starter, new battery, I did check my grounds and reran new wiring from the battery to the main grounds, new clutch interlock relay. The odd thing is if I hold the key after about 3 second it slowly wants to start and then gives up. after about 3 times it sounds like the bendix isn't kicking out all the way and grinding or just free spins without engaging. no blown fuses and have had the starter off and checked 3 times. I recently noticed that the positive wire off the battery is ridiculous hot after these attempts and the relay is clicking really loudly. If anyone has a suggestion please let me know.

ok update. took the starter off, had it tested, and its perfect. But I swapped it out anyways since i was already off. Still doing the same thing. Being this is new starter #2 i am going to shy away from the starter itself.
A new noise has appeared, when rying to start, getting multiple very fast clicks from what sounds like the rear of the car, along with the clutch interlock solenoid.

My next guess would be a ground wire issue, particularly the strap between the bell housing and body, but you say you've completely checked out all ground connections. The heat at the battery terminal means there is still a massive amount of current being drawn when you turn the key. The clicking you hear is a relay tripping in and out, or a noisy fuel pump. I don't think these are the cause, but are devices being starved for adequate amperage as battery is drawn down. This may not be a wiring issue. I had an '85 Chevy C-10 develop this same symptom, would not turn over or turn over slowly when cold. Would start right up when warm. The problem eventually manifested itself as spun or galled main bearing that seized. The engine hasn't been running warmer than normal or overheating perchance?
