How to adapt a 14mm threaded shaft to a 15mm hole: Looking for shortcut!

OK, it's the reverse light switch on my 5-speed '86T tranny (Nissan OEM part #C2005-06P01). The orig non-working switch has a 15mm diameter but the only replacements available are aftermarket,14mm diam. Same switch, different shaft diameter. Call that great luck!

There were two trannies installed in 1986 (basic BW T5 and whatever) and I got the rare one. The location on the tranny is so high up we can't get in there to tap a larger hole and use a 14mm adapter sleeve without dropping the tranny. Big pain for a small switch.

Has anyone ever done this kind of diameter cheat? - on a tranny or anywhere - in a way that worked for a permanent install? Just looking for other ideas - if not a genius short-cut.

(Sure, I thought of recyclers - but they are not gonna sell me a switch off the side of a tranny even if I bring them a cork to plug in the hole.. unless I buy the whole tranny... I mean, it's only the back-up lights, right? Not that big of a deal. But on my Z, they have to work right or I hate myself and say bad words every time I shift into reverse... )

Thanks in advance for your help, anyone!

Thanks for the replies!

I have two aftermarket switches here now, one is a Chinese replacement (Intermotor LS275) for the Nissan part number in my orig post. The other is Beck/Arnley 201-1680. Wrong connector there but we can fix that.

Both have 14mm threads. I am assuming the tranny is the BW T5 but the thread on my dead switch is definitely not 14mm. We know that's too small. So 15mm seems logical. The Delco part you found looks right but the diameter is probably 14mm. When I talk to parts people, they don't have the diameter info - so it's like buying in the dark. Nissan parts places won't accept return on the part either and it's usually $70-$90. No way do I need another 14mm.

Nissan shows a change to the tranny in '86 but the change is back by the shifter and the light switch is more forward on the housing.

I'm trying to figure out how to use one of the 14mm switches in the existing hole. Or I have to drop the tranny and sleeve it. Let me know if you can think of anything. Chewing gum, liquid metal, plumber's tape, mashed potatoes, something... Thanks again guys. I appreciate it.

Or you can buy the correct one from Steve. Call him or email him and tell him what you want.

Are you sure you have an FS5R90A tranny? Take a pic of the tranny post it.

Ford and Chevy Sources?

The T5 tranny was used by many manufacturers, with the swappable bell housing being the major difference in the application. I know the T5 was used in the Mustang III and I think also in Camaros of the same vintage. The reverse light switch plumps into the driver's side of the main gearbox body and they have may all been ported the same. There may be other more common applications to consider as well. Just a thought...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Borg-Warner-T5-Reverse-Back-Up-Light-Lamp-Switch-New-1000-140-013-/311074452301?_trksid=p2054897.l4275 may be promising, but I would ask for thread size confirmation from the vendor.

Thanks for the input. Parts distributors keep telling me they don't know the diameter and can't find out (can't bother, they mean, for such a cheap part). Would be good to find somebody who has one there on the shelf and will take the time to check the diameter. Still looking for that!

Found out from a parts place that the following are supposed to be aftermarket replacements for the OEM part:

CarQuest 53-11699
Wells JA4240
Airtex 1s5630
Forecast 89002
Havam 1.860.210
GM 88923567

I was thinking you could try a local Ford, Chevy, Jeep, etc dealership and actually look at the part before buying one. Take your old switch with you for comparison. Most counter personnel wouldn't know it came out of a Z31. The alternative would be to check out used T5 trannys at a salvage and see if your Z31 switch fit other castings.

Cool idea. Did the Borg/Warner T5 tranny keep its name through all the other non-Nissan uses or did they change it depending on the mfr/model it went into? Would be a lot easier if it stayed BW-T5... Recyclers sort by mfr/model/yr so they might not know the tranny by origin...

Read this: Borg-Warner T-5 transmission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Yes, it's wikipedia which can be sketchy, but this article is short and appears accurate. The list of vehicles may be incomplete, but it's long enough to get you started looking. Note the T-5 was used in V6 Mustangs up to 2010. Ford dealers may actually have reverse light switches in stock.
