Rack and pinion

Before I go spent $300 at AutoZone for a rebuilt Rack and Pinion, I though I would ask you guys if theres another option or an upgrade. Its for my 82 280zxt with power steering.

What's wrong with your rack? And why would you blow $300 for a reman? Get one from a straight junk yard car for $20-$50.

If you want to mod your rack, check out PurePontiacKid's setup: https://www.zdriver.com/forums/280zx-s130-forums-77/just-foar-teh-lulz-28955/

I didn't really do any mods to my rack, just deleted a couple lock nuts for a teeny bit more steering angle; not to mention mine's a manual rack so nothing really transfers over.

Well I want to replace it because it leaks really bad. And many people have told me that if you just put new seals in that most likely it will still leak. I just can't believe there almost $300. And one more question whats the best way to replace that? Like do I have to pull the motor or will it slip out?

I replaced mine with a reman unit from Cardone (Advance Auto) a few years ago. No issues. It came with new inner tie rods too. I used an engine crane to lift my engine a few inches because I did some work on the oil pan at the same time. Its tight but you can do the work without removing the engine.

That sounds right, it was a few years ago that I did it. I remember it being expensive! I had the same problem as you - mine was leaking really badly and I didn't trust myself to rebuild it with new seals properly. I googled quite a bit and I've heard people complain about Cardone branded parts, but mine was fine and I've got a few thousand miles and a couple of autocrosses on it so far without issue. I don't really remember much about doing the job... there was a bolt and splined shaft that connected to the steering wheel / shaft that was difficult to separate, and the clearance was pretty tight even with the engine lifted up a bit. Other than that it was straightforward and easily done in a day.
