hey everyone i just purchased my first 280zx, its a project car and theres a lot of work to be done, it runs and everything, it doesnt have an exhaust just straight pipes, sounds horrible, it rattles a bit but i feel its because there is no exhaust. it has 200k+ miles on it, so if there are any suggestions please feel free to let me know, the first thing i would like to work on is the engine, get it running strong with no shakes rattle or anything, and i feel as if it is underpowered from what i heard it had a good amount of get up and go, so how can i fix that. thanks guys

Welcome to ZDriver!

First off, do a general look over and fix anything major.

Also, check out our General Tech section for a lot of info: https://www.zdriver.com/forums/240z-280zxt-s30-s130-tech-tips-275/

well any number of things could be wrong to cause a car to run rough. These cars have a zillion vacuum lines on them, and after 30 years they are most like dry rotted and or cracked, maybe even cracked right off. A bad enough vacuum leak issue would cause a rough idle and a loss of power and even fuel mileage. Try checking the conditions of the lines/ hoses. The car could just really be in need of a tune up depending on how well it was maintained, maybe even check your fuel filter. I don't know what to tell you specifically, just start going through all the simple things first
