280ZX-R Hatch Strut Replacement

I wanted to pass on some information about heavy duty struts for any ZXR owners looking to replace your weak or worn out hatch struts. I have tried a few different standard struts with less than desirable results due to the weight of the hatch with the whale tail most struts are just not the right capacity rating. I have found that the capacity needs to be a minimum of 70lbs. The original struts (Nissan #99996-R8004) I believe have an 80lb. rating. I have attached a PDF with the specs. I found that work well.

Enjoy the ride!

Phil

w00t!

The Z32 hatch struts are also an easy upgrade option: https://www.zdriver.com/forums/280zx...s-280zx-31527/

Make sure you get the 2+2 z32 struts, the coupe Z32 is shorter.I have a set in my 280ZX right now and they work perfect with the spoiler and heavy rear hatch louvers.

Old thread bump, but I used hatch struts from a old Nissan minivan hatch. Ended up about an inch shorter, but will lift the hatch with the touch of a pinky finger!
