VH45DE swap
#26
theramz: in your opinion, how hard would it be to mate a t56 to the vh45? i happen to have just picked up a t56 for rather cheap, and I would like to also do the vh45 swap. But as you obviously were, im worried about space. (well not so much worried, you seem to have a good handle on the problem) Judging from your pictures, i dont think the t56 is that much bigger size wise, however I am not sure how shaft styles/lengths would change. Tell me what ya think.
Looking GREAT though man, keep up the awesome work. excited to see it sit in there.

My first choice was a T56 just because but I couldn't seem to find a T56 for less than $1500 used that probably needs rebuilt. I got the T5 for $200 knowing it needs rebuilt. Syncro kit is $215 on ebay. 5th and 6th gears are overdrive and only serve to increase mpg. I am not concerned with mpg but I want to be able to go on the freeway with the 3.9 diff.
If you notice the T56 has a longer gear case so the bell is shorter. I would buy a pressed steel bell on ebay with the T56 bolt pattern and cut the mounting flange off and weld on a fabbed one. There is a guy on ebay selling adapter plates for the VK56 and 6 speed from a 370Z.
I work in a machine shop and just finding enough open time for a "G job" is hard enough. If you can't do it yourself, I think you are going to pay a lot of money for the r&d.
I have been waiting 2 months for the clutch disc.

It has to be 9.5" diameter to fit the Nissan pressure plate and have 10 spline Ford center. The unsprung ceramic is available but it's not very streetable, too grabby and it tears up steel. I ordered it from Summit, they just didn't have any in stock.

Picked up my intake flanges from the water jet shop. Going to order the stuff I need to fab the plenum and runners. A perfect slip fit for the bolts and port match. Should flow really nice.

[QUOTE=DeathByNissan55;311733]so hows it going man, im close to getting that tremec so interested to see how it all finishes up. how much would your setup change if it was a VK instead of VH?[/QUOTE
I think I would make an adaptor plate to fit a trans that has the starter on the bell housing. The VK has the starter between the heads on top, don't like that at all.
I finally canceled the clutch from Summit. I called Fort Wayne clutch and they made a sprung 3 puck with Kevlar on the flywheel side and ceramic on the pressure plate side. Had it in my hand in 5 days! I got all the materials from Ross Racing for the custom fabbed intake and am working on that. Also going with an electric water pump, more fabricating. I had to make some pie cuts on the water intake to clear the 5" intake plennum and 90mm tb. I will post some pics soon.

After talking to a friend from wisconsinzcrew.com, Ive decided to do the VH45 like you, but with the tremec Im getting (hopefully ) so i hope you could help me out with the mods that you've done to the engine that arent bell housing related(not to do the work, but what you did so i can do it). In return, if my harness that I will be building works well for just the L26, I could make one for you for that engine(if it doesnt have up to date wiring spec, but I think it does)

My moto= never give up, if you do you lose.
Just got back from 2 weeks in Maui. I am still waiting for some G job time at work but so far I got the manifold started and the water pump. I'm going to go back and finish the little details of the trans like the TO bearing and new syncros. I had to make some pie cuts in the water inlet to clear the plenum.

I just gotta wait for paycheck to get my floors and wiring harness done. Right now I'm just hoping to have a completely running stock 260, then im going to buy suspension over the next year and then get the q45 items.

I already have my suspension and brakes done but the Q engine weighs about 160 lbs. more than the L6. I hope it doesn't soften the ride too much. I wasn't planning on this when I did it. Might have to change to coil overs later on.

With how far back the motor sits in the engine bay I wouldn't worry too much about the extra weight on the front. I would be more worried about the shocks handling it.

A little more progress. Intake runners milled at 22.5 degrees and taped in place to check dimensions. They intersect the plenum in the place I planned. The electric water pump adapter plate is another story. I got a Moroso pump for a big block Chevy but all I can use of it is the motor and mounting plate. Have to start over on that cause the holes cover 2 of the others. I'm going to drill and tap the block for them. Next week I will try and mill the holes in the plenum and then weld it all up.

Thanks, I would like to have an apprentice to pass on my 47 years of experience but the commute would be a bitch.
You're smart to realize you need practical experience to go with your education. Our young engineers can't run anything but a PC. They can't get the concept of fit, form and function. They can design a $2000 water pump but Pep Boys sells them for $50.
I'm going to set up the mill on the plenum hopefully this week. Got to leave town this weekend so more delays. I think I will just stay after work and get it done.
