LS1 in my Z =] With Pics!

I have a 1973 Datsun 240Z that I am going to put an LS1 from a 2004 GTO with 30,000 miles on the engine and A4 Tranny. It has JBA Ceramic shorty headers, and magnaflow exhaust system attached. Also a D-1SC Procharger attached. I dont think I am going to use the blower, because I cannot afford to buy the motor + tranny + procharger off of my dad.

But I have a 280Z engine + 5 speed with 30k on the overhaul and rebuild. Also I have the Original 240z engine + 4 speed. The engine is overhauled and rebuilt with just over 40k miles, and the Tranny has original miles.

The car itself is in great shape and has 240k on the body. There is virtually no rust, the tiny bit that is there is just surface. But yeah her body is straight and shes a blast. I love her.

One, yes my dad did wreck the GTO unfortunately, thank god he walked away unharmed. Secondly, people who have swapped LS1's into their Z's are really happy with it. The engine is light, and gives the car almost 50/50 weight distribution. I would love to put a Nissan engine in there RB series, but I dont have 10k to do it right. The LS1 will be more reliable stock/ lightly modded I think than a possible shady engine from Japan, And it will make more power than an RB26 stock, and weigh a lot less than that heavy engine. People will hate on it, or they will love it, to each his/her own. But w/e I have the other 2 motors for when I want to restore it years from now.

i never said stick an RB in it either. lol. in all honesty, when you got a car as light as a 240Z id love to stick in an SR they make great power are light as hell and so short they make teh car a mid engine technically cause it sits behind the front cross member, makes weight dist, amazing. but the cars are just fine with stock motor. got any pics of your car?

Yeah but the V8 does the same thing for weight distribution, and is gonna give you way more power and torque than an SR. I've read a bunch of different threads saying that the V8 will sit behind the front cross member as well. Although I'm not a huge fan of mixing the american and japanese, but it would make for one hell of a ride.

no no, odnt get me wrong, it would work well since its an aluminum block, so it wont add weight from stock, and will make good power/weight and be a sick car, its just the principle in my mind i guess you know? kinda like how i hate roller blades. no reason, i just do. lol.

btw, whats the hardest part of roller blading?

telling your mom you gay!

also there is a guy on here with a GTO motor in his 240Z already, that or a vetter motor i forget which one, he runs like 10's in the 1/4 so its not to shabby.

Yea the 04' GTO motor is the Corvette motor. But yeah, I am hoping for it to be a sick *** ride, my goal is to make it insane under the hood, and awesome looking on the outside. I will take pics sometime soon

Hi Unknown898,

Just about any small block Chevy (SBC) makes for a great conversion in a Z car. The LS1 is aluminum and very light. It is also much shorter than the original L6 Z motor and it is much lower because it is a V configuration. It should end up weighing about the same or a little less than the old motor. Done right, it will mount completely behind the front axle. This should change the normal Z 52% front 48% rear weight distribution to the much sought after 50%-50% weight distribution. Because the engine is behind the front axle it improves the polar moment of the car. And last, the mass is lower with the SBC engine so you will find that the conversion will actually improve the handling of your car.

BTW, it also makes for one seriously fast car!!!!

Stop over at Hybrid Z http://www.hybridz.org/ for more information.

Mine isn't an LS1 but it looks (and works) like the factory designed it that way.

Hi again Unknown898,

I am known as SpeedRacer over at Hybrid Z as well.

Some people don't like what I have done to my Z but I at least saved it from the junk yard. BTW, it was one of the first "Car of the Month" cars on this site and I have a ZDriver shirt to prove it.

Hope to see you over at Hybrid Z.

Speed

i dont mind the conversion if you saved it from a junkyard. i mind when people destroy bodies on perfectly good Z's its just a waste.
