Need Advice in SU Carbs
Hello all,
OK so I finally got around to working on my 71 240Z that I have had sitting in various driveways for the last seven years. No telling how long it sat around on it's previous owner. However, I do have it running although it is really rough when you try to go from idle to high rpm. One thing I know I did wrong, was my neighbor sprayed carb cleaners in the oil reservoir screw top of my Flat SU carburetors. I tried to find a good place to look at taking them apart and cleaning them, but as I read different post, it appears that these are what people refer to as boat anchors. I have a little money I would like to put into this Z, but not really sure if I want to keep it original or rat rod it. The car is in fairly good shape. There is some rust, but minimal from what I have seen on this site. It's and L24 Motor and the number on the tag do match the number on the motor. So in a nutshell here are my questions:
1) Is there any good places that show how to dismantle the carbs clean them and put them back together? (I did search but can't seem to find one)
2) Should I give up on these carbs and go to another set of carbs and if so what would you recommend.
Thanks!

Search over on Zcar.com for posts by Mr. Completely. He has torn down the flat tops. I have three sets of flat tops in my garage. Two were given to me, and I pulled a set off of my 260Z last weekend. There isn't a detailed video that I am aware of.
I hope you won't need floats. I bought the last set that Rockauto had, and I'm not sure if anybody else has them. The gasket kits are still available, though. Power valves are NLA. If those are shot, you are SOL.
These carburetors are not terribly complicated. I suggest that you get the gasket kits and tear into them if you want.

Thanks for the reply. After reading all sorts of post it appears that people really dislike the flats. That when I was wondering should I try and make these work better (rebuild them) or put the rounds or even go with Webers. Did you get your flats running the way you wanted?

I'm moving to SUs on the 260Z just because I work too much and don't have the time for care & feeding. While most in the community hold the flat tops in contempt, there are some who have delved into their secrets and are VERY pleased with performance.
Now the big question is...Who swapped flat tops onto your 71? Post a picture of your carburetors to verify.
