Great job, k33fer! Well written and covers all the good stuff. The 240s were a sensation because the Japanese looked like they had finally entered the sports car market. Toyota would soon follow with the Celica - but that was really no sports car at all, just a sporty-feeling little sedan. The Z was beautiful to look at (thank you, Ferrari, Corvette, etc. for the body design!) and great road-hugging fun to drive.
I remember my uncle buying a brand new 240Z in 1970/71 and the family gossip that his new wife (married 1 year) didn't like the car, would not ride in it - and she told him it was time for him to grow up and leave his toys behind. He loved that car! They had arguments about it. She stayed furious about it.
He drove it anyway - but the fun lasted only a year and a month. (70s Japanese cars in general were terrible on snow and ice. They turned into instant iceboats. Didn't matter what speed, how you braked or what tires you used, they would just lose control quickly and drift, sideways, backwards or just glide aimlessly forward, control-free, down the road.) He wrapped it around a tree one icy winter morning on the way to work and it was over. He spent 2 days in the hospital but survived just fine except for his permanently damaged knee. He didn't replace the Z - but used to tell me that I really needed a Z if I wanted some road fun. I bet he's still carrying a picture of that Z in his wallet! Thanks for the great post.
