Project rb25/26 240z...thinking of selling my Skyline GTR for a Z

Hey Guys, im really glad i found this forum....

I'm looking to get a 240z in the very soon future, and was wondering how hard a job it would be to put in a Rb26, or better yet a Rb25det RWD?....i ask because that's where i'd like to go with the Z.....unless another motor is better suited for the job?

I'd really like to track the car, and go to the occasional drags....how well do these cars handle when fitted with the right parts, being quite light in all i'd think they would be quite good....

It's mainly for the street, but ive love the looks, and i have a R32 GTR right now which im looking to sell to buy the Z, so i kind of want the performance as well....i got 350kw at all four right now....probably a bit extreme for a street driven rwd 240z?

Thanks to all who help me out, ive got the Z bug, and i can't wait.

What will i need to look out for with the 26dett, or 25det transplant, and what stock parts will not be able to cope?.....if possible how much did it cost?

Im in NZ, and RB26, Rb25 motors and all jap motors really are easy to come by....240z's not so easy...but parts are yes

its not bad, you can get all the mounts and driveshaft custom made or theres a company that makes all that and exhaust and DP and IC i believe called mckinneymotorsports.com something along those lines. the wiring for the ecu isnt to hard either i found the write up for it on hybridz.org its pretty straightforward. only thing is you would need to replace the speedo for one that does a digital read out. its no bit deal though and a great swap use the RB25 tranny of course.

This is a good story.
To get rid of a GTR for a Z.
I think I am shedding a tear.
No wait.

That's just manly eyeball sweat.

Nah. I love the idea. I just don't see all the hype for Skylines. They are cool, but I like the Z more too.
Keep us filled in. Nothing but time and money. It should be a pretty easy swap really. I would go RB25DET with the RWD trans. Just easier. But, I would like to see an AWD RB26 Z too. It's a toss up.

Nice to have a Kiwi on board.

Cheers mate - yeah ive done the whole GTR thing.....owning one and all...its cool, but this would be different, and more fun to drive IMO (plus they look awesome, im going for the JDM look with the ZG Flares and old skool watanabe's....

So would it be a fairly easy transplant?....im thinking of still going for a Rb26dett with a RWD sump, theres a few here i can buy in NZ with that combo.....anything i need to look out for, is it better to go for a lighter engine, im primarily having it as a street car, but would like to track it aswell!

I would expect to have some decent power from a stock rb26 in a car like the datsun?....

Just need to know what else would need to be changed up at the same time, im a bit sceptical as to whether the factory brakes, diff, driveshaft will handle?

I would say if you are going to throw that heavy engine combo in, I would upgrade brakes too. Besides the improvement in power. It really is a heavy ship anchor of an engine. But, with a car as light as ours, it will still be a low weight combo.

There is info on oil sump mods, crossmember, and the likes.
You will find more information over on Hybridz.org
This is a swap that has been done a few times. It's expensive in the States, but I imagine it would cost less where you are located.
Make sure to do some searching over on Hybridz.org.
Sure they don't mind helping, but they have given some in depth info on it already, and it will save you and them both some time.

Whatever you do, keep us posted. I love watching everyone's projects.
Take a ton of pictures.

I agree that the Z is 10 times better looking than any GTR. It has all the right curves in all the right places. GTR's are boxy, and kinda ugly IMO. Not that I don't think they are cool. I would own one if they were easy to get a hold of here. You guys get all the cool toys down there.

I love my GTR, but youre right, they are big boxy cars.....look awesome, but just not my style i guess haha, id rather be driving an old school Datsun 240z with 16"s.

But like i said, ive done the GTR Thing....and its not for me, for a daily driven car, pushing out 10.9's its great, but now id like to change it up a bit.

you can get a rear oil sump from a 200zr that would fix that issue for the rb25det
