Progress!!! I now have spark but I don't think its timed right. Still won't start but now i get a back firing out of the AFM/intake area. I ended up wiring in a HEI 4-wire ignition control module out of a 1980 Chevy Chevette.

I also might have the afm on backwards... lol

dont use the pontiac tail lights or w/e those are to fugly!!! also. from the sounds of it for good measure i would do the following, take off the dizzy from the block drop the oil pump make sure teh oil pump shaft put the motor at PROPER TDC and re-align the oil pump shaft and oil pump stick it back up and re-situate the dizzy, however first you might also want to try checking and making sure the AFM is positioned UP RIGHT AND IN THE PROPER DIRECTION the AFM doesnt work if its upside down or on its side since it is weighted. then clean all electrical connection on the EFI harness and re-bend the prongs in the clips to ensure they make a tight grippy contact on the male ends, and by all i mean on the CHTS the AFM the injectors the TPS (might be forgetting something here) AND at the ECU itself. also make sure no wires are loose inside the connections, i had a couple wires that would push away from the ECU when i plugged it in so they didnt make contact unless i individually pushed on those wires. then the car ran flawlessly.

It Runs!!!! well sorta the AFM is bad and needs to be replaced so other than that its alive. For one thing the 4-wire HEI works great, better than stock even.

do any of my tips? at least the cleaning and re-bending all the connections and checking the security of the ECU wires. if not, and your car was like mine, it will give the illusion that the AFM is bad when reality its just old electrical BS

This situation is exactly part of the reason why I opted to use my 280ZXT as a daily for a while. I could work out all the issues and get it running good, then come the swap I know it's running good. So if it doesn't start it's a wiring issue.

Yeah found out that the afm that i was given was a NA not a turbo one. I need to look more closely at that kind of thing.

It runs now... Sort of. It takes a while to get it to start then it just dies unless I take off the CHTS and then it runs really rough then dies. But at least I can get it running.

LOL LOL theres a HUGE difference in AFMs both in size and number of prongs in the AFM for the clip/connector

running great until i kicked a wire loose some where and now have no spark again and no power to fuel pump... I'll be trouble shooting what wire got disconnected tomarrow. On the plus side when I was driving it, it was like a batt out of hell on a fire from a jet engine!!!!! I also have to get my windows installed and a better down pipe to connect to the exhaust.

thats the one thing thats tough about these swaps the wiring is very fickle.... since you wired it though you will be able to figure it out very soon, if its not your own connections that are at fault then its at the ECU or the AFM/tps/ignitor that went wrong.... pretty simple

Update:

As of last wedensday I was driving it to make sure everything was good. I parked it back in the garage to check for leaks and what not and after not finding anything I tried starting her again. With my luck the ECU would not power on. So I check all my wiring and could not find the culprit. The next day I remembered to check the Fuseable links that go from the relay to the ecu. Guess what I found, the previous owner cut out the links and used regular wire. So I just fiddled around with it a little bit and tried to get power to the ecu. When I hit the switch (hidden cut off that powers the ECU and deck) the harness above the ECU started smoking and was glowing like elton john on prom night. I quickly undid the battery and now my harness is completely screwed. I talked to the wife and she gave me the go ahead to get the MegaSquirt setup!!!! So as of when our Tax refund comes in I'll be getting MS1 on the new 3.57 board. !!!! Along with that I will be getting the MSA downpipe with wideband O2 sensor!!!!!!!

Will update as things progress.

All that work for it to "go up in smoke". MS was meant to be!

Yeah well here are some teaser pics of my engine, I had to remove the intake and exhaust manifold to install the MSA downpipe. So while i was doing that I might as well paint the engine at that time...

and the intake that is going to go on it...

You had to pull the intake / exhaust to install the MSA downpipe? I would think it just slides up onto the turbo from the underside, no? And has that intake been de-webbed?

^^^ Is it? Most N42's are non-egr.
