78 r200 diff slop

Hey guys.. so my diff thats in my car has some slop in it..

The cars symptoms when driving was a clunking sound everytime i step on the gas.

I put it up on a lift and wiggled the driveshaft.. everything seems tight all the way back to the r200 diff.. seems like the internals have alot of play and results in my clunking sound.

No idea of mileage on the part but is it rebuildable and if yes what should i buy?

the driveline came outve a 78 280z 5speed.. its all installed in my 240z..

thanks in advance for the help!

I think you would be better off getting another one from the local j yard. They used the R200 until 1987. The best one in my opinion is the '79-'82 5 speed 2+2 which all had the 3.9 gear ratio. I just bought one with near zero play for $65 from Pick n Pull. Sometimes worn out u joints in the axles wil clunk too so check all that.

i know my first car i bought after i graduated highschool is at a junkyard. i sold it after driving it for 3 years.. sold it with only 101k miles. It was a 81 280zx 5 speed. I can get the trans from it for 150 cash but it has a piece broken off the shifter area that held a pin or bolt enabling the car to shift..

not sure of the diff price but i can give them a call. however, the car might be hard to get to due to lots of snow.

I was able to luckily get some parts off it last summer, like the brake booster.. I want to install that into my 240z.. Im contemplating pulling the trigger on some arizona zcar wilwood brakes front and rear caliper and rotor setups. Anyone running these on their cars?? Opinions? I have the bigger brake booster.. just need new master cylinder.. Then Id like to put all new brakes and suspension parts. Is there a good online source that offers a whole bolt in kit? asides the expensive azc kit option? those are quite steep in price imo

That trans is worthless unless you have the broken piece and have it tig welded back on or a new piece made.

dang.. was hoping the trans would be usable, but the damage plus the wear on that trans isnt worth the hassle.

would a 81zx have the right diff im looking for though?

Yes, but be aware that Nissan used the r180 all the way through those years but I think it was just on the A/T cars. The 5 speed cars had 3.54 gears.

XenonS130 - S130 Differential Differences

81 5spd 280zx has 3.9 ratio... according to this source.

Im now thinking I want to put this into my other 71 that is all stock.. what should i grab off the 81 thats in the junkyard?

do i need the halfshafts off the 3.9 r200? or mustache bar? or any of that?

Id like to put my 76 motor into the car and buy a rebuilt 5spd for it to go with the new 3.9 rearend.

If you have the r200 diff longnose allready in there (from say a later Z), than you should be fine to get the one out of a 280zx, as you should already have a mustache bar installed. The gearing is just internal and has no affect on your halfshafts.

Well i bought a r200 with halfshafts from a local person.. not sure the ratio.. I think its a 3.9

when i rotate the input shaft about 4 times it makes 1 revolution on the halfshafts..

now since i have a different 240 with stock everything, do i need the later style r200 mustache bar or will the stock bar thats bolted in there be ok?
